Supremo

SHRAPNEL LABEL GROUP, INC. - After a thirteen year break, ''supremo, the groovin' blues fusion powerhouse featuring guitarist Robben Ford, bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta deliver their incredible 4th record for Tone Center, Jing Chi, '' produced by Jimmy Haslip and co-produced by Robben Ford. Ford's solo career and other collaborations, together with Colaiuta and Haslip's demand as top LA session players, have more than kept the guys busy in the interim.

Supremo'' is more than a vehicle for fantastic soloing as the compositions are important, well arranged pieces of music that exhibit a synergy rarely heard in today's music. This is a collaboration between renowned guitarist robben ford who has been recording under his own name and as a session player since the 1970's, Frank Zappa, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta Sting, Tommy Bolin, Steely Dan and bassist Jimmy Haslip Yellowjackets, Steely Dan with special guest appearances by saxophonist Jeff Coffin and trumpet session veteran Mike Haynes.

Supremo - The tone center label's mission has been to place highly talented, yet diverse players in the studio, and let the tapes roll. Tone center's fourth jing chi release continues to follow that tradition of the ''Super Session, " but with more emphasis on their compositions. He is a gift and is the band's sonic architect.

The horns are used primarily as an underlying texture with clever lines that weave in and out bringing to mind vintage jazz and soul music with a modern edge. However, when the opportunity arose to get together once again and make some great music, each player brought his A-Game to the table and the result is nothing short of a collaborative masterpiece that breaks new musical ground for this stunning trio.

I'm proud to say that ''supremo'' is a high energy Modern R&B fusion explosion of sound!''.

Protocol 4

Phantom Recordings - In addition to awesome musicianship, Simon's impeccable production and recording technique shine once more on this album. All compositions were written by Simon while on tour. Dennis hamm's keyboard work is stunning on each and every track, whether he's soloing or adding lush orchestration. Greg howe's guitar work shines throughout the recording, perhaps no more so than the plaintive and anthem-like track "Phantom Voyage".

The album concludes with the monster high energy fusion track "Azorez". The tracks "pentangle" and "Solitaire" both contain some super funky grooves underlying jaw dropping metallic jazz/rock soloing. But, as is always the case, simon's music defies specific labels as he fuses elements of rock, jazz, funk, classical and even world music into the mix.

Lots of creativity on airplanes and in hotel and backstage dressing rooms", says Phillips. Passage to agra" is a rhythmic musical excursion to an exotic foreign land. Building on his past protocol projects, simon has again enlisted the highly talented bassist Ernest Tibbs along with PROTOCOL newcomers, the superb veteran guitar shredder Greg Howe and keyboard virtuoso Dennis Hamm.

Protocol 4 - A case in point being the track "celtic run" combining a Celtic rhythmic motif with blazing guitar and synthesizer leads all held together with Phillips signature ultra-tight drumming and Tibbs ever solid bass work. Shrink-wrapped. Perhaps the vibe and energy of touring accounts for the slightly more "metallic edge" to this new album.

Trip

Heads Up - About a year ago mike stern, one of the highest regarded most successful jazz guitarists alive today, had a terrible accident. Shrink-wrapped. He broke both shoulders when he tripped running across a street in Manhattan. Shrink-wrapped. Trip, his upcoming 2017 release is his stunning return after multiple surgeries and a lot of gumption.

Produced by pianist-keyboardist jim beard, ' 'screws, ' 'b train' and lyrical ballads 'emilia, urgent swingers 'half Crazy, ' 'Scotch Tape and Glue, ' 'Watchacallit', Trip is a brilliant showcase of what the acclaimed guitarist does best - riffing on post-Miles funk-fusion 'Trip, Stern's frequent producer going back to 1991's Odds or Evens, ' 'I Believe You'.

More than just a comeback, this album is about Mike's career and his musical partnerships which Mike loving refers to 'as a trip'. Feeling sufficiently fortified, stern and his stellar crew of sidemen - many of whom go back with him to the '80s - went into Spin Studio in Long Island City between January and March of 2017 to record his 17th album as a leader.

Trip - The guitarist's sly, self-deprecating sense of humor comes across in the title of the album, Trip, as well as on individual tracks like 'Screws' he initially had 11 screws put into his arm following his first surgery and 'Scotch Tape and Glue' his current method for holding onto the pick. A powerhouse outing, the latter a bandmate in miles davis' 'comeback band' of 1981, saxophonists Bob Franceschini and Bill Evans, Trip, bassists Victor Wooten and Tom Kennedy and drummers Dave Weckl, features such longstanding colleagues as trumpeters Randy Brecker and Wallace Roney, Dennis Chambers and Lenny White.
